ZAHIRA TORRES is editor of the El Paso Times. She is the second woman and first Latina to lead the 137-year-old newspaper. As a reporter in El Paso, Torres uncovered a cheating scheme led by the superintendent of the city’s largest school district that denied numerous students their right to an education. Torres went on to work for The Denver Post and then at the Los Angeles Times, where she was part of the team that won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news for its coverage of the San Bernardino shootings. Her awards include the Headliners Foundation of Texas’ Charles E. Green Award for Star Investigative Report and the James Madison Award from the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas, the state’s most prestigious honor for advocacy of open government.
